October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and YWCA Wheeling has set up two events to spread the message.
First, there will be a "Striking Out Domestic Violence" bowling event from 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at St. Clair Lanes. The event is sponsored by the Tri-County Help Center in St. Clairsville and the YWCA Wheeling, who will be paying the costs for bowling and shoe rental.
Reservations can be made by calling St. Clair Lanes at 740-695-3641.
Next, a domestic violence awareness walk has been set for noon on Thursday, Oct. 26. The walk will start at the YWCA Building at 1100 Chapline St., and will progress to Wheeling's waterfront.
Those participating are invited to wear purple to show support for victims of domestic violence. There will be resources and displays, as well as purple popcorn from Mmm Popcorn.
Jennifer Sorg, family violence prevention officer at YMCA Wheeling, explained the events serve to help the organization inform the public that services and help or domestic violence is available if they need it.
"The YWCA has a domestic violence shelter, and services we provide through safety planning and referrals," she said.
She added the YWCA also employs court advocates to assist domestic violence victims, as well as teen dating advocates, and child advocates to address middle schools students about such issues as bullying.
"We have support groups for anger management," Sorg added. "We also have visitation and exchange monitoring for children."
She noted the bowling event tonight marks the first time YWCA Wheeling has coordinated with the Tri-County Help Center for an event.
