The historic Cockayne Farmstead, 1105 Wheeling Ave. in Glen Dale, is getting into the Christmas spirit by hosting its annual concert and an open house.

The annual Victorian Christmas Concert is slated for Dec. 10 inside the historic home. It will feature two concerts by Faire May; one at 3 p.m. and another at 7 p.m. Tickets for each show must be purchased in advance by calling 304-845-1411.

Kara Gordon, site coordinator, said because of concerts' intimate setting, only 25 tickets will be sold for each show.

"The concert is a very unique experience because it is such an intimate space. The musicians don't need amplification and you get to be right there close to them," she said. "Like they are playing a private concert for you in your Victorian living room."

Tickets are $15 each.

"I also love that they are playing some of the same music that the Cockayne girls would have played in the same room they would have performed it in," she added. "The Cockayne girls were very well-known musicians in the 1890s. They even had a band called the Oriole Banjo and Mandolin Club.

The annual Christmas Open House tours at the Cockayne house are slated for Dec. 4 from 6-9 p.m. The guided tours are $8 for adults and free for children 12 years old and younger.

"With the decorations and costumed actors in each room, we really try to bring the past to life so that you feel like you are stepping back in time," Gordon said. "There are sights, sounds, smells and stories in every room that immerse you in the past. Even if they have come before, the decorations and the stories are different each year."

Gordon said this year she is excited to have Christian Turak portray Sam Shaw, a cousin of the Cockaynes.

Gordon noted that the city of Glen Dale is also having its tree lighting ceremony the same night, adding to the fun.

This year the farmstead is also conducting a Letters from Santa program. People can bring in their letters to Santa and the farmstead will make sure Santa sends one back to them. There is a $5 donation requested to help cover postage costs. Letters should be brought in by Dec. 14.
