WHEELING -- Saturday is the day small businesses around Wheeling enter the spotlight, as they present their inventories to shoppers in areas throughout the city for Small Business Saturday.

The event rallies support for Wheeling's diverse small businesses throughout the holiday season. Small Business Saturday, a national initiative led by American Express, recognizes the critical contributions of America's entrepreneurs and small business owners. According to organizers, for every dollar spent at a small business, approximately 67 cents remain in the local economy.

Several activities are planned throughout the day:

– A Centre Market Balloon Drop begins at 10 a.m. at the top of the Upper Market House. Balloons will be filled with exclusive discounts at shops in and around Centre Market.

– The Wheeling Artisan Center Shop will offer a chance to win a $100 gift card. No purchase is necessary. Primal Pickles will distribute samples of their locally-made pickled products at the shop from noon-1 p.m..

– The City of Wheeling will sponsor a special artificial ice rink from 3-8 p.m. at Market Plaza.

The city also will sponsor a special one-day loop on the OVRTA Queen of the Valley trolley, free of charge for easy access to Market Plaza, the Wheeling Artisan Center, and Centre Market.
