Marshall County Animal Shelter at Capacity for Dogs; In Urgent Need of Adopters

The Marshall County Animal Shelter is at maximum capacity for dogs and is urgently seeking more people to adopt the canines.
Shelter Director Abby Bateman said the capacity issue is because of an influx of stray dogs being found and brought to the facility during the past couple weeks.
She noted the shelter does not want to have to turn away dogs in need so getting current dogs at the shelter adopted out is important.
There are 19 dogs available for adoption, according to the shelter's Facebook page.
Those interested in adopting a dog can get a head start on the adoption process by submitting an application at www.mcwvanimalshelter.com. Once an application is reviewed the shelter will call to schedule an appointment to come meet the dogs.
The Marshall County Animal Shelter is open six days a week: noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday; closed Tuesday; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday.
Same-day adoptions can be done if a person's application has already been submitted. For more information, call 304-845-9770.
When someone brings in a dog they have found, the shelter puts it on a five-day stray hold. If no one claims it, the shelter will start a medical workup and then it is placed up for adoption.
The shelter requires people to fill out an application before adopting a dog. The application is good for three months. So if people are interested in adopting they can fill one out now and have it approved ahead of time.
People can also visit the shelter for meets and greets. Those who cannot adopt, but would like to sponsor an adoption can do so as well.
"We plan on doing a 12 days of Christmas adoption promotion to help get more dogs into homes for the holiday," she said Thursday. "We don't have all the details at the moment, but it will probably consist of reduced cost adoption fees."
Batement noted people can also help out by being responsible pet owners and making sure their own pets are spayed/neutered. Doing so helps reduce the overall homeless animal population, she added.
