Powhatan Point VFW Hosts First Wreaths Across America Event

Powhatan Point Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5565 and American Legion Post 228 of Powhatan Point hosted their first Wreaths Across America ceremony on Saturday at Powhatan Cemetery.
According to Chuck Baker of VFW Post 5565 and Sons of the Legion Post 521, the organizations placed 1,118 wreaths on veterans' graves there. Baker said that over 150 people attended the event.
"It was a big crowd," he said.
Several local community members and veterans spoke at the celebration about freedom and service.
Larry and Kelly Kenney served as co-chairs and organizers for the event.
Wreaths Across America strives to encourage others to "remember, honor and teach" about what it means to serve their country, according to the organization's website.

Similar ceremonies were held in Steubenville, also on Saturday.
During those activities, about 500 wreaths were placed across four cemeteries. A ceremony was also held at Harding Stadium with guest speakers, presentation of wreaths, benediction, 21-gun salute, and more, according to published reports.
