Ohio County school students took home major wins in a state-wide contest promoting anti-racism and honoring Martin Luther King Jr. after they produced award worthy essay and film projects.
The "Project on Racism Contest" is sponsored annually by the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs.
HHOMA will host the "Celebration of Diversity" awards ceremony at noon Saturday to honor the student winners. The ceremony can be viewed on HHOMA's Facebook page, or at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, on WV Public Broadcasting, the West Virginia Channel.
The Project on Racism Contest was presented by the Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission and the YWCA Wheeling. Entries were accepted for essays, music, and five-minute films and was open to any student from grades 1-12 attending public, private, parochial or home school in West Virginia.
All entries focused on the following quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.: "Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
The entire Class of Wheeling Central Catholic High School took home the 1st place prize in the film category for grades 9-12. Participating students were Braxton Billick, Wyatt Brady, Kaitlin Brodegard, Jake Brown, Aaron Chapman, Thomas Cottrill, Lucca Ferrera, Caleb Golden, Tylique Marshall, Isaac Martin, Keyuri Morgan, Michael Steiniger, Luke Tiu, Lilly Whitelatch, faculty members Miss Carpino and Allen Chip Jones, and teacher Michelle Thorngate.
Bethlehem Elementary School students swept entries in the grade K-5 – essay contest. Winning the 1st place award was Brantley Myers, grade 5; 2nd place, Baleigh Anderson, Bethlehem grade 4, and Spencer Benedict, grade 5.
Winners for essays in grades 6-8 were 1st place, Leah Lief, Triadelphia Middle School, grade 7; 2nd Place, Miles Rockey, Triadelphia Middle School, grade 7; and Jaxson Updegraff, Bridge Street Middle School, grade 8.
