Pre-K Registration Starts In Ohio County

WHEELING -- Monday marked the first day of registration for pre-kindergarten students for next fall in Ohio County, and many families took advantage of the opportunity, according to Superintendent Kim Miller.
She informed board of education members Monday night 181 children so far have been signed up.
"We pushed out an overabundance of information just so people would be aware (of the registration)," Miller said.
Parents wishing to register their child may access an online link at the Ohio County Schools website - boe.ohio.k12.wv.us/. They can also call the Ohio County Schools offices at 304-243-0333.
Youngsters eligible for pre-kindergarten next fall must be 4 years old on or before June 30, 2024.
Miller said she and Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones recently toured construction currently happening at Elm Grove Elementary School.
"The construction at that building is unbelievable," she told board members. "The square footage in those rooms are in line with the state department. It's amazing how much space those teachers and those students will have."
Construction should be completed in late May, Miller said.
In other matters, Roseanne Ferro, a staff representative for U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., appeared before the board to offer Senate commendation to Wheeling Park High School Principal Meredith Dailer. In December, Dailer was announced "Principal of the Year" during the annual state Leaders of Education Conference.
The award signals recognition from both the West Virginia Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals and the West Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals.
A number of personnel changes were also approved Monday night.
Board members approved the retirement of Barbara Rudolph, a multi-categorical teacher at Madison Elementary Schools. She has been employed with Ohio County Schools for 39 years.
Also, the board agreed to the transfer of Bridge Street Middle School Assistant Principal Karin Butyn to the board office to take on the role of director of public relations, marketing and alumni relations beginning today.
The board will next meet at 6 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the board office, 2203 National Road, Elm Grove.
