Huntington Emergency Keeps Gubernatorial Candidate Steve Williams From Appearing at Moundsville Event

An emergency at the city building in his hometown prohibited Huntington Mayor Steve Williams -- a Democratic candidate for West Virginia governor -- from making a scheduled stop in Moundsville Tuesday night.

Williams had been set to attend a 6:30 meeting of Marshall County Democratic Executive Committee at Perkins Restaurant.

But just before the event Barbara Scott, president of the Marshall County Democratic Women's Club, received a text from Williams explaining he had not been able to leave Huntington and would not be attending the meeting.

He told Scott that earlier in the day, there had been an incident at the city building in Huntington in which an employee "had been threatened," and that he had to remain on scene.

Scott said Williams is expected to be in Wheeling Thursday night to attend a campaign reception for Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott, who is a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

First elected Huntington's mayor in 2012, Williams is completing his third term as mayor.
