Marshall County Animal Shelter Seeking Homes for Older Dogs

The Marshall County Animal Shelter is nearing its capacity for dogs and is in need of new adopters for the many canines there.
Director Abby Bateman said winter is sometimes a low time for adoptions anyway, which has contributed to the issue.
"Dog adoptions have been pretty low lately. This time of year, not a lot of people are wanting to come out and adopt dogs. So we are full," she said.
"We have quite a few senior dogs that are looking for homes to go and live out their golden years," she added. "They're harder to adopt out, so that doesn't help the situation as far as adoptions being low."
She noted there are also some dogs that need to be the only pet in the home, or have anxiety issues and need someone to be home more often.
The maximum number of dogs that can be kept at the shelter is 27.
"It can go from 17 to 27 in 24 hours," she noted.
Bateman said there are several dogs that have sponsored adoption fees, which means they are free to adopt. Senior dogs also cost less than younger dogs. People just need to fill out an application for consideration.
"The adult dogs that have already gone through the chew stages are ideal," she noted. "If you're looking for someone who is chill and you're not really an active person, a senior dog is really a good idea. We have quite a few couch potatoes who just want to cuddle up and spend the day not doing a whole lot.
"We have nice dogs right now who are looking for their forever homes and someone to love them. That's all they're asking."
The Marshall County Animal Shelter is open six days a week: noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday; closed Tuesday; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday.
Same-day adoptions can be done if a person's application has already been submitted. For more information, call 304-845-9770.
