WHEELING - Ohio County Democrats will host a county convention next week to select delegates to represent the county at the State Democratic Convention this summer.
Ohio County Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Mark Garrett has announced the county convention will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 16 at The Iron Workers Union Local 549, 2350 Main St., Wheeling.
During the convention, an official convention chair and secretary will be elected, and attendees will elect 45 County Delegates to represent Ohio County at the State Convention in Charleston June 14-15.
"We encourage all registered Democrats, who are residents of Ohio County, to get involved in the democratic process and attend this important event," Garrett said. "This convention is important because those elected as delegates will go to Charleston in June and will vote for the people who will represent our state at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August."
The delegates to the national convention are selected during the State Convention. West Virginia has been allocated 25 delegates and two alternates to the Democratic National Convention.
The county convention is open to all registered Democrats in Ohio County and those who would like to be Democrats. Voter registration forms will be available at the convention for those who wish to register as a Democrat.
County conventions are mandated by state statute. A county must hold a convention every year that there is a presidential election.
At the state convention, delegates approve the party platform and elect five presidential electors.
Light refreshments will be served following the county convention. The event serves as an opportunity to meet with and hear from Democratic candidates and elected Democratic officials, and meet fellow Democrats from Ohio County.
