Ash Avenue Church of God in Moundsville Planning To Host New ‘Christian Microschool’

Church and community members learned Sunday about plans for a new Christian school to be operated out of the Ash Avenue Church of God in Moundsville.
The new school, which will be called the Fountain of Truth Learning Center, will be offered to students in kindergarten through eighth grades, said the Rev. C.J. Plogger, pastor of Ash Avenue Church of God.
The directors of the school will be parishioners Jim and Debbie Tasker, who have helped operate Christian schools in the past in other states, Plogger said.
The new school will use the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum, which allows students to work at their own pace on goals set each day instead of being taught directly by a teacher. Monitors will help the students if they need it.
Kindergarten students will have a dedicated teacher to teach them to read. Plogger said with ACE kindergarten students learn to read in nine weeks.
There is already some interest from parents as a few showed during the meeting on Sunday. A couple people said they believed their children would learn better in such a setting because there will be more time for them to learn a concept or math. In some public schools, they believe, if a child does not get a concept fairly quickly they must move on with the rest of the class to a new concept.
Jim Tasker said the school's tuition will be $6,000 a year, but parents could apply to receive the Hope scholarship funding from the state to help cover a portion of the cost.
Plogger described the school as a "Christian microschool."
"We're going to be using the ACE. This is individualized to meet the kids where they're at," he said. "If they're in a lower-end area it will bring them up to where they should be. If they're advanced it will continue to help them be advanced. It has been used in 18,000 schools in the United States and we're excited about it."
