Marshall County Schools recognized its Teacher and Service Personnel of the Year during a ceremony held Tuesday at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex.

Certificates were also handed out Tuesday to several nominees of the awards bestowed annually by the Marshall County Board of Education.

The Service Personnel of the Year award went to Nicole McCulley, a media library aide at Center McMechen Elementary School and Glen Dale Elementary School. The Teacher of the Year award went to Abby Edman, a fourth grade teacher at Central Elementary School.

Both women were excited and honored to receive their awards.

"It's very exciting for me. I work really hard behind the scenes to give the kids the best opportunities that I can," McCulley said.

McCulley said she has been working with the district for about a year and in her current position since January.

Edman said getting the award was "a big honor."

"I really appreciate the recognition," she said.

Edman has been teaching at Central Elementary for four years and working in education for 18 years. She enjoys teaching fourth graders.

"I love their creativity and their independence. It's a perfect age to do projects and a lot of fun, exciting technology. They love to learn and they're excited about everything we do," Edman said.

Other service personnel of the year nominees included: Erika Whipkey, Jason McGilton, Janet Hinerman, Jamie Miller, Erica McDonald, Jennifer Patrick, Melissa Francis, Keith Wright, Tamera Smith, Deborah Jochum, Melissa Pajak, Meghan McCartney, William Games, John Elson and James Gorby.
