A waterline break that interfered with holiday plans in Martins Ferry's service area on Monday is repaired.
Zack Beck, a pump operator at the Martins Ferry Water Treatment Plant, said the break that happened around 2 p.m. was repaired by about 9 p.m. Monday. He said the cause of the break was unknown.
The break left nearly the entire city without water service, along with other areas the system serves such as Bridgeport and Brookside. Those customers who did not lose water service due to the break were advised to expect an outage at some point as the repairs were being completed.
According to Beck, a boil order is in effect. All customers of the Martins Ferry Water and Sewer Department should boil water vigorously for at least one minute before consuming it or using it for oral hygiene.
The boil order went into effect at 9 a.m. Tuesday and will remain in effect for 48 hours from that time.
