MOUNDSVILLE – The revival and renovation of a long-time roller skating rink was celebrated Thursday in Moundsville.
A ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce was held at the newly renovated rink, dubbed the Roller Derby.
The rink’s new owners, Marcy and Nate Harler, purchased the building, located at 510 10th St., and began working on it about two years ago. The Harler family also includes children Cooper West, 10; Annie, 3, and Kane, 10 months old.
“We’ve been in real estate for awhile, and when it came up for sale we loved the idea of bringing something back to the community for the kids to do,” Marcy Harler said.
Harler, who graduated from John Marshall High School in 2006, said she used to skate at the very same building as a child.
“My parents lived on Ninth Street so I was here a lot,” she said.
Harler said a lot of planning went into getting the business and building ready to open. Now that it is open they have already hosted some parties and are taking bookings for others.
“My favorite part has been the design. I love glitter, lights, bright colors – so that has been the best part for sure,” she said. “I want people to know it is a place you can bring your kids. It’s fun for everybody – the whole family.”
In addition to roller skating, the Roller Derby also has some arcade games such as air hockey and basketball. There is also a concession stand with food such as pizza and hot dogs, drinks and ice cream bars. There is off-street and on-street parking at the building.
Marshall County Commission President Mike Ferro, who attended the event, described the roller rink as “wonderful for the community.”
“Nate and Marcy put a lot of time and effort into this. I think it’s going to be a wonderful addition to Marshall County,” Ferro said.
Scott Reager, director of the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce, said the Roller Derby is going to be “a fun attraction for the city.”
“I think there is a lot of buzz in the air about this Roller Derby opening back up,” Reager said. “They invested a lot of money into it and I think it’s going to pay off. I think it will attract everyone from the Ohio Valley.”
Reager said he also skated at the rink when he was a kid.
“I skated all the time. It’s exciting to see how they turned it around. Everything is new and fresh,” Reager added.
City Manager Rick Healy described the rink as “beautiful.”
“It’s unbelievable the transformation that was made,” Healy said. “I remember this when I was a kid and when my kids came here. We’re super thrilled to have it open in the city. What an addition. It’s something for kids of all ages to do as well as adults.”
