Rose Defeats Incumbent Maroney in District 2 GOP Race

MOUNDSVILLE - Republican Chris Rose defeated a two-term incumbent Tuesday to win the GOP nomination to the District 2 seat in the West Virginia Senate.

Rose, 33, of Morgantown, was victorious over Sen. Mike Maroney, R-Marshall, chairman of the Senate Health Committee. Rose received 7,624 votes in the election; and Maroney, 4,794. There were no Democrats filing in the race.

"First and foremost, thanks for the hospitality during the campaign," Rose said to voters late Tuesday night. "I appreciate them for taking the issues so seriously, and seeing the contrast between the two opponents, and voting for the one that shares their conservative West Virginia values."

He estimates his campaign knocked on over 4,100 doors in District 2, which encompasses parts or all of Doddridge, Marion, Marshall, Monongalia, Tyler and Wetzel counties.

"Our strong door-knocking campaign, and meeting voters at their door, was key in this race," Rose said. "I look forward to representing our district in Charleston, and championing the needs of our district. I am forever grateful for this opportunity."

Maroney, as chairman of the Senate Health Committee, had been a proponent of existing child vaccination laws during his tenure in the Legislature.
