Marshall County Schools mechanics, bus drivers and an archery competition winner all were recognized during the Marshall County Board of Education meeting Tuesday.

Marra Tharp, a 2024 John Marshall High School graduate, was congratulated on her archery season and presented a certificate from the board. During her latest competition, she placed 24th out of 99 seniors at the Daytona National Championship. And in the overall girls ranking, she was 147th out of 1,265.

Earlier in the season, she competed in the Eastern Nationals, placing fifth out of 477 senior participants, and she ranked 27 out of 2,496 high school students.

Meanwhile, the board also recognized the county's bus mechanics for once again having the lowest defect rating of any school district in the northern region during a recent bus inspection conducted by the West Virginia Department of Education.

Transportation Director Jody Korn said the county received a 0.04 defect rating.

"It takes a team to get that rating," she said.

Mechanics who were presented a group certificate of achievement included Scott Miller, Randy Tharp, Larry Conkle, Nate Lilley, Tom Gorby, John Bungard and Mike Korn.

"They got a first-place rating last year and the only challenge was, can you duplicate it? And they did," said board President John Miller.

The board also presented certificates to the district's bus drivers who recently won the West Virginia Association for Pupil Transportation School Bus Safety Road-E-O Team Award. The drivers are Nadine McCardle, Britta Hill, Chuck McClure, Kenny Richmond, Wilson Barnes Jr. and Emily Hickman.

Some also took home individual trophies: first place, small bus category, Hickman; second place, small bus category, Richmond; third place, small bus category, Hill; first place, large bus division, McClure; and first place, transit bus classification, Barnes.

Both Barnes and McClure are slated to represent Marshall County Schools while competing in the 2024 School Bus Driver International Safety Competition in Austin, Texas, on Saturday and Sunday.
