An autopsy report released Friday by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner confirmed that a 1-year-old Bellaire girl who died at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh died of acute fentanyl toxicity.
The autopsy report also ruled the death an accident.
The girl's father, 38-year-old Cameron Cothran, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, evidence tampering and possession of a federally regulated compound. He was arrested May 1, but posted $100,000 bond and was released May 6.
According to Belmont County Sheriff David Lucas, the girl died April 24 after Cothran dropped her off at the East Ohio Regional Hospital emergency department and left. Lucas said the girl was "contaminated with fentanyl."
The girl was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Children's Hospital, but died there. Lucas said it was not known where Cothran went after dropping the girl off at EORH, but he later returned.
Cothran is a Cleveland resident who had been living in Bellaire. Reports indicated he was raising the child on his own because her mother was incarcerated. Cothran pleaded innocent in his initial court appearance.
Lucas said the girl's death was the first of a child by overdose this year.
