The Marshall County Commission announced Tuesday that it will contribute a significant chunk of the cost to Phase III of the City of Cameron's Water System Improvements project, allowing that project to go out to bid.
The commission will put $350,000 into the pot, finalizing the project's funding package at $4.4 million.
"We have made a conscious effort the past few years to help our PSDs replace and repair old, deteriorated water lines," Commission President Mike Ferro said. "When we can make a $350,000 contribution to a municipal water project and it brings an additional $4,050,000 into our county, the decision is almost a no-brainer."
The project includes replacing lines in the areas of Gable and Hillcrest avenues and U.S. 250 North, including approximately 8,400 linear feet of 2-inch to 6-inch water lines, approximately 65 new water meters, new service lines, fire hydrants, various valves, and more.
The City of Cameron has been working to develop and fund the Phase III Water Project for almost 10 years.
"We are grateful to the Marshall County Commission for their contribution of the matching funds for our project," Cameron Mayor Greg Galentine said. "Without these funds we were set to lose $3 million of our grant funding. Thrasher Engineering and the Bel-O-Mar Regional Council have also been instrumental in helping us put this project together and secure the financing package."
The Phase III funding package includes awards from the Drinking Water Treatment Revolving Fund Forgiveness Loan, WV Water Development Authority EEGF (Grant), WV IJDC Grant and the Marshall County Commission. The City of Cameron has put $50,000 of its American Rescue Plan Act funds into the project. The financing package will be administered by the Bel-O-Mar Regional Council.
