TRIADELPHIA — Local animal shelters have been offering adoptable cats and dogs at discounted prices in an effort to clear the kennels that are at capacity.

The Ohio County Animal Shelter, 7011 National Road, Triadelphia, announced recently that it will be offering its cats and dogs for $30 instead of the regular price of $80. The fee includes some vaccines and a $51 voucher for spay/neuter services by a veterinarian.

The discounted price will be available for about the next two weeks or until July 17. The Ohio County Animal Shelter is open 12:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, though it was closed on Thursday and Friday for the Fourth of July holiday.

Wendy Neubauer, shelter manager, said many of the animals have been surrendered by people for a variety of reasons including moving away or having owners who died.

“We are full. We have 15 dogs and 17 cats,” she said. “We have everything. We have pitbulls, hounds, huskies, mixes and an old female boxer who is so sweet.”

To help reduce its numbers, the Marshall County Animal Shelter recently held an adoption special of $44 for its dogs. That promotion ended this past Friday.

The Belmont County Animal Shelter also recently held a discounted adoption event, offering dogs for only $5 each, to reduce its at-capacity numbers. While that promotion has ended, there are still dogs waiting for their forever homes. The shelter is slated to hold a Pet Adoption Day from noon to 4 p.m. Monday at the Candlewood Suites in St. Clairsville. Those who adopt during the event can receive 10% off a hotel room to begin bonding with the pooch.

For those adopting a cat or kitten, Webark Estates offers free rabies vaccines and other combination cat vaccines during its clinics held at the Compassionate Care Cat Clinic, 86 27th St., Wheeling. The vaccines are made possible with help from Petco Love. The next vaccination clinics are slated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 12 and 19. No appointments are necessary.

“There are no income requirements or questions; cats from any county are welcome,” according to Webark.

Also, the rabies vaccination clinics are continuing in Ohio County and cost $8 per cat or dog. There is no residency requirement. Remaining clinics, held from 5-7 p.m., include:

– Monday, Woodsdale Elementary School;

– Tuesday, Wheeling City-County Building;

– Wednesday, Valley Grove Community Center;

– Thursday, Bridge Street Middle School; and

– Friday, West Liberty Elementary School.

Starting at $2.99/week.
