WHEELING - Vintage planes and an air show will take to the sky when the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport celebrates aviation with "Wings Over Wheeling," set to happen Aug. 24 at the airport.
A classic car "cruise in" also will be part of the festivities, as will food, vendors and music, explained Stephanie Hockenberry, growth and retention manager with the Ohio County Development Authority. The Wheeling Symphony jazz ensemble will perform in the airport's terminal at lunchtime.
"Wings Over Wheeling" - a free event - is slated to begin at 10 a.m., and continue through 5 p.m.
Hockenberry explained it as a fun family experience that provides the public an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport.
"If they haven't experienced it yet, they should come see the airport," she said. "There's a lot of great memorabilia inside. It will be exciting, with planes you can see and touch."
Hockenberry described "Wings Over Wheeling" as "a family event where the public can get excited about aviation."
"As we move into fall with the new aviation program with West Liberty University and Marshall University, the public will be able to see all the progress as we move forward," she said.
A classroom for the aviation program is presently under construction at the airport.
The event is still seeking sponsors and additional vendors. Those interested in participating should call the OCDA office at 304-234-3628
"There's going to be something for everybody," Hockenberry said. "If you can make time to come out and be part of the community, you will also be part of a positive momentum we're trying to build in Ohio County."
The West Virginia Airport Managers Association is set to host its annual West Virginia Aviation Conference from July 28-30 at Oglebay Park. A particular focus will be the new aviation program starting this fall at West Liberty University through its partnership with Marshall University's Bill Noe Flight School.
