WHEELING -- Oglebay Park's Good Zoo is getting a big financial hand from the West Virginia Water Development Authority in renovating and upgrading its grounds.
Oglebay announced Friday that the WDA has awarded the Good Zoo a $2.3 million grant to support renovations and upgrades to the zoo's entrance. Renovated areas will include the lobby, gift shop, cafe, restrooms, and back courtyard.
The project, set to begin in early 2026, is part of a larger $7.5 million expansion plan focused on enhancing the visitor experience.
"We are incredibly grateful to the West Virginia Water Development Authority for their support in helping us improve the guest experience at Oglebay Good Zoo," said Bob Peckenpaugh, Wheeling Park Commission President & CEO. "This renovation is a crucial step forward in ensuring our visitors have a comfortable and enjoyable experience, while also allowing us to continue our mission of wildlife conservation and education."
According to Oglebay, the upgrades to those zoo areas will enhance accessibility features, improve the flow of visitors throughout the space, and create a more welcoming atmosphere. The expanded cafe will offer a variety of food and beverage options, including grab-and-go snacks and made-to-order meals, ensuring guests have a relaxing and enjoyable visit.
Additionally, a new gazebo with upgraded picnic facilities will provide guests with a comfortable space to enjoy their meals and the zoo's natural beauty.
Oglebay's Good Zoo is the only zoo in West Virginia accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It is home to more than 250 animals representing 68 species, including 20 rare or endangered species.
Welcoming more than 120,000 visitors annually, including 13,000 schoolchildren, the zoo is recognized as a leading destination for educational and hands-on animal experiences.
