Book Sale To Raise Funds for Mount Wood Cemetery Restoration
Wheeling Heritage, in partnership with the Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation, will host a book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the first floor of the Wheeling Artisan Center.
Proceeds from the sale will support the ongoing restoration of Mount Wood Cemetery, which was established in 1848 and saw significant improvements in 2024.
“We’re excited to continue the momentum from 2024 and make even more progress on the preservation efforts at Mount Wood Cemetery,” said Scott Schenerlein, executive director of Wheeling Heritage. “This book sale is a great way for the community to support this important historic site while finding their next great read.”
Jay Frey, president of the Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation, said significant work already has been done at the cemetery to preserve what is there. Rantiff Services LLC spent two full days restoring larger monuments in July and October, and that work was paid for from the Mt. Wood Cemetery Fund at the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley.
“Eleven monuments were reassembled, among them some of the largest, heaviest and most prominent in the cemetery,” Frey said. The visual impact is significant. The book sale will help replenish the funds we spent.”
A workshop on cemetery mapping and documentation will be presented by Cemeteries Foundation volunteers Laura Dawson and Penny McConnell midday during the book sale. The event is free and open to the public, with all proceeds benefiting the restoration of Mount Wood Cemetery.
