‘Tiny Patriots’ Event Rescheduled For April 5

By Joselyn King 2 min read

WHEELING - Ohio County Schools still wants to meet the babies and toddlers who will be students there in the years to come, and that opportunity will now come later in the spring.

The "Tiny Patriots" event has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 5 at the Wheeling-Ohio County Library. Children ages birth to 4 years old and their families are invited to attend.

Those attending will get to meet the staff at Ohio County Schools and "put names with faces," explained Karin Butyn, public relations coordinator for the school district, who organized the event.

In addition, "Tiny Patriots" will serve as a community resource fair for young families. There will be booths set up with information about Ohio County Schools early childhood programming, the Birth to Three program, and offerings from WVU Medicine, the Science of Reading, Communities in Schools, Head Start, and Oglebay Institute. Representatives from Wheeling Heritage and West Virginia Northern Community College also are expected to be present.

Upstairs, children present will be able to take part in a number of activities that will rotate each half hour, according to Butyn.

The Tiny Patriots event had initially been set for Jan. 11, but was cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

"Because of inclement weather, I was nervous about rescheduling in February," Butyn said. "That was clearly a good decision."

Registration for pre-kindergarten classes is now open online at boe.ohio.k12.wv.us, and those still needing to register will be able to do so in person at the event.

They may also contact Butyn at 304-243-0493, and she is able to register the youths over the phone.

So far, 226 youngsters have been registered for pre-kindergarten classes in the fall, according to Superintendent Kim Miller. The number is the highest experienced by the county.

Miller noted that 236 children have been signed up for kindergarten. Kindergarten is mandatory for children in West Virginia, while pre-kindergarten is not.
