Wellsburg Man Charged With Kidnapping After Police Confrontation
A Wellsburg man has been charged with two counts of kidnapping following a confrontation with police in his vehicle while his house was burning Wednesday night.
According to court documents, Brooke County sheriff’s deputies responding to a fire at the home of Dallas W. Goddard, 33, of 77 Peak Road Loop, found him, his girlfriend and their infant child in a vehicle parked nearby.
A deputy said when he opened the vehicle to check on them, Goddard told the officer he would have to kill him.
The deputy said he drew his Taser but Goddard refused to comply with his orders while holding his girlfriend and child in front of himself.
He said a family member approached Goddard and convinced him to give her the child.
The deputy said it became clear that Goddard was unarmed and he ordered him to release his girlfriend and get out of the vehicle but Goddard refused.
The officer said another deputy was able to grab Goddard’s arm and stun him with his Taser, causing Goddard to release his girlfriend. The deputies said Goddard struggled with them as they arrested him.
Brooke County Sheriff Rich Beatty said the State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire to Goddard’s home.
The case against Goddard is pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court.
