Ohio County Spring Cleanup Days Continue
Those doing their spring cleaning still have time to dispose of unwanted items and trash during Ohio County’s “Spring Clean Up” days.
Dumpsters will be set up from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following dates at these locations:
– Today: East Wheeling, at the Old Penn Wheeling Closure, 58 19th St.
– Saturday: Clearview Community Center
– April 16 : Bethlehem ballfields (near Char House)
– April 25: Pleasanton, at the playground
– May 2: Elm Grove, at the Patterson Ballfield
– May 9: Wheeling Island, at Belle Isle Park.
– May 10: Stone Church Volunteer Fire Department.
Rebecca Friend, executive director of the Ohio County Solid Waste Authority, noted all items acceptable for a landfill will be accepted at the clean-up event.
“That includes anything you would put out in curbside collection,” she said. “No hazardous waste will be accepted. People should save that for our fall event.”
No paints, stains, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries or pesticides are accepted. The authority, however, will take organics — such as shrubs and lawn debris — for composting.
“We are doing a pilot composting project with West Liberty University,” Friend said. “Any organics we receive will be taken to the composting pile at their campus.”
Metals for recycling also will be accepted at the events, and taken to local recyclers.
Those bringing in items must be a resident of Ohio County, and Friend said the authority will be checking for identification. Acceptable forms of identification include a valid drivers license showing an Ohio County address, proof of taxes or water bills.
The city of Wheeling is providing some staff at the events to help residents unload their items.
“We really appreciate the community’s support,” Friend said. “Assistance from the city is important.”
