BRIDGEPORT -- The Bridgeport Rotary Club will begin planting U.S. flags in yards and in front of businesses for residents in the village who would like to show some American spirit during summer holidays.

People can sign up to sponsor a flag for $60 a year. The Rotary Club will then do all the work by placing American flags in someone's area of choice. All of the proceeds will fund various Rotary projects in the village.

The club inserts a PVC sleeve, which is a protective cover known for strength and durability, into the ground at a respectable place of viewing in a yard or other setting. No brackets or fixtures are attached to the home. The club will place a 3×5-foot flag, made in the United States, on a 10-foot pole in the sleeve a couple days before each of the holidays, take it down afterward and store the flag until the next holiday.

The holidays when flags are flying include Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day through Sept. 11 and Veterans Day.

There are currently more than 60 sponsored flags from Aetnaville to Kirkwood Heights, over to the Blaine Hill Bridge and on U.S. 250.

"We are currently expanding daily," he said. "It is awesome to see the pride and patriotism we have in the Ohio Valley."

Actual installation and removal days will depend on weather conditions.

The Rotary club says that by signing up, a person agrees to accept the Bridgeport Rotary Club's judgment on the placement of the PVC sleeve to avoid sprinklers, electrical, telephone or fiber-optic cables, if necessary.

Flags must be partially illuminated, which can be by a street light, porch light or an actual light on the flag, and the flag cannot touch anything as it waves, according to the American Legion rules.

Call Tim Smith at 740-359-6436 or Bob Weaver at 740-635-3463 for more information and for program forms.

Send the completed form and $60 check payable to Rotary Club of Bridgeport, 20 Brookside Ave., Bridgeport.

This is only the Rotary club's second year placing the flags in the village, but Smith said the club has had an overwhelming response.

"We would like to thank everyone for their continued support, and through everyone's efforts we were able to purchase three 'Welcome to Bridgeport' signs," Smith said. "With future revenue, we will continue with projects throughout Bridgeport to beautify the community."
