MOUNDSVILLE -- The Marshall County Sheriff's Office has identified an increase in scams impersonating Norton Anti-Virus and PayPal recently, and is urging the public to be vigilant and informed of the fraudulent activity.
There have been recent reports of individuals being contacted by scammers posing as tech support representatives for Norton Anti-Virus and PayPal. The calls are an attempt to elicit private information or gain remote access to personal devices, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.
"We urge everyone to be cautious and not provide any personal information to callers or individuals who request access to your computer. Legitimate companies will not ask for sensitive information in this manner," Sheriff Mike Dougherty said in the statement.
Dougherty's office also provided tips for residents to stay safe from these scams. First, it is important to verify unknown callers by hanging up and calling the company back using the official number listed on their website.
Do not share personal information or give out passwords, social security numbers or financial details over the phone.
Finally, Dougherty encouraged residents to document and report suspicious calls to local authorities so they can be aware of the issue.
"If you suspect you are being targeted by a scam, please immediately call the sheriff's office. We are here to help and guide you through the situation," Dougherty said.
