A new wound care and aesthetic treatment facility in the valley commemorated its opening on Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Apex Wound Care and Health Services, located on Fairmont Pike Road, provides a variety of services for wound care, including acute and chronic wound management, as well as aesthetic and wellness treatments.

Apex Senior Vice President of Business Development Eric Tucker said the idea to open a wound care facility first came to him and his wife, registered nurse Tamara Tucker, in October of last year. The couple decided to purchase the office location in Sherrard and transform the building into a multi-purpose health service facility.

“We just want to capitalize on skin rejuvenation with acute and chronic wound healing, while also beautifying people by helping them have healthier skin through aesthetic treatments,” Tucker said. “We’re trying to build this multi-purpose space from the ground up, and we anticipate having to hire some folks in the near future.”

Apex provides acute and chronic wound management to help treat bedsores, diabetic ulcers and surgical wounds. The facility also has a mobile wound care team available to visit patients.

“Our model is to partner with skilled nursing facilities and home health agencies to bring health care solutions where the patients are,” Tucker said. “Our providers get consulted by referring physicians and other entities to go into the home or into a skilled nursing facility to help provide healing for those patients.”

Apex Medical Director Nurse Practitioner Stacie Koontz said they would commonly treat patients with wounds that occur from chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, venous insufficiency and pressure ulcerations.

Apex also provides aesthetic and wellness treatments at its brick-and-mortar location. These treatments include medically supervised weight loss programs, Botox, dermal fillers and skin rejuvenation treatments.

Tucker stressed that their services were “complementary, not competitive” with other health care providers in the area. He said Apex was a “huge supporter” of WVU Medicine and other local health care providers.

“We definitely will be triaging patients to WVU Medicine and communicating with their team because having WVU Medicine here is great for patients,” Tucker said.

Marshall County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Scott Reager said it was exciting to see another health service facility added to the area during the ribbon-cutting.

Regional Economic Development Partnership President and CEO Joshua Jefferson echoed Reager’s words during his speech on Tuesday, adding that the area needed to see more collaboration among businesses to help local health care options grow.

“Apex has partners at the Chamber of Commerce and the county commission that are very good about being a business-friendly county,” Jefferson said. “Apex is obviously covering a significant need, which we appreciate, so congratulations to the whole team.”
