The American Heart Association is recognizing WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital and WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital for their focus while treating heart-related ailments.
The hospitals collectively earned four separate awards through the AHA's 2025 "Get With The Guidelines" initiative, a premier national recognition program that honors hospitals for their quality improvement efforts and clinical excellence.
The awards are presented to participating hospitals each year once they demonstrate how patient care is aligned with the latest scientific research and evidence-based guidelines.
"What makes these Get With The Guidelines awards so meaningful, is knowing what they represent for the Ohio Valley region," said Doug Harrison, regional president of WVU Medicine. "People here no longer have to leave their community or travel long distances in search of world-class stroke or heart care. It's right here, in their own backyard.
"Families can have confidence knowing their loved ones are receiving the highest level of care from our stroke center and heart care teams, who are recognized nationally for excellence. That's what truly matters."
The GWTG initiative began 25 years ago and is aimed at improving patient care and outcomes, as well as lowering readmissions, and reducing deaths and disability associated with cardiovascular disease and stroke, according to information provided by WVU Medicine.
WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital received three of the awards:
– Get With The Guidelines -- Stroke GOLD PLUS with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus
– Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll
– Get With The Guidelines -- Resuscitation: Target: Survival Achievement Award
Additionally, WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital received the Get With The Guidelines -- Resuscitation: Target: Survival Achievement Award.
Earning honors such as "Gold Plus" and "Target: Survival" means these facilities met or exceeded rigorous benchmarks related to stroke care, in-hospital cardiac arrest response, and diabetes management in stroke patients.
