Former State Senator Michael Maroney’s DUI Case Headed to Circuit Court
The trial of former state Sen. Dr. Michael Maroney on a DUI charge is headed to Marshall County Circuit Court.
Marshall County Prosecutor Joe Canestraro said Maroney waived his right to a trial in Marshall County Magistrate Court during a Wednesday pretrial hearing. A trial date in circuit court had not been announced as of Thursday afternoon.
Maroney had been scheduled to go to trial next week before Marshall County Magistrate Zach Allman, but that has now changed.
The charge stems from a Sept. 23, 2024, incident where McMechen police officers stopped Maroney after he allegedly committed "numerous traffic infractions." Police Chief Robert Shilling arrested Maroney on suspicion of driving under the influence and Maroney was charged with DUI-controlled substance.
Maroney pleaded guilty in June to an indecent exposure charge from an August 2024 incident where police said he was caught on camera at the Glen Dale Gumby's committing an act of sexual gratification.
Maroney was fined $250 and sentenced to time served. He already had spent seven days in jail for violating the terms of his bond after he refused to comply with a court order that required him to both attend and pay for drug rehab. He also spent 30 days in home confinement.
