The Highlands Sports Complex is celebrating five years in operation with special events slated for this weekend, while also honoring first responders and raising money for local flood relief.

“Stonger Together: Highlands Sports Complex 5-Year Celebration” is slated for 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the facility. The arcade and climbing wall will be open until 8 p.m.

All those attending the event will get a $5 voucher for the arcade, and the climbing wall will be free.

The anniversary and fundraising event supports families affected by the recent flooding in Ohio County. Proceeds will benefit the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley’s Disaster Recovery Fund.

“Although we are marking five years in operation, we are using this to give back to the community,” explained Caleb Schilling, director of guest services at the sports complex. “With the recent events of flooding, we are also now using this to support fundraising efforts and honor our first responders.

“There will be a lot going on for all ages.”

Local first responders will be recognized at 10:30 a.m., and there will be speeches in their honor, Schilling said. The sports complex will be providing meal vouchers to first responders and their families throughout the day.

There will be tournament fundraisers for cornhole and pickleball play from 10:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per person or $50 per team, with cash prizes for top placements. First responders will be permitted to participate for free.

Free roller derby play will take place at 10 a.m. and again at 6 p.m., and there will also be 50-50 raffles throughout the days. Winners of the raffle will be announced during the derby at 3:30 p.m. and 5:40 p.m.

A community fair with local vendors will happen from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Also slated are free kids clinics and climbing wall sessions, though advanced registration for these events is required.
