Vehicle Pursuit Ends With Crash and Apparent Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

1 min read

A police pursuit that began just after midnight Monday ended with a crash and an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Bridgeport Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop of a motor vehicle early Monday. The vehicle failed to stop, which led law enforcement into a vehicle pursuit. The vehicle crashed on Interstate 70 westbound around the 216 mile marker.

Officers approached the vehicle and noticed the driver was suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers attempted lifesaving measures on the driver until the Cumberland Trail Fire District arrived at the scene.

Belmont County Sheriff James Zusack on Tuesday declined to confirm the condition of the driver or release the driver's name "out of respect to the family."

The Bridgeport, Martins Ferry and St. Clairsville police departments and the Ohio State Highway Patrol all assisted the Belmont County Sheriff's Department in the investigation.
