Patients can now get PET/CT scans at WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital as part of its advanced diagnostic imaging services, WVU Medicine announced Monday.

While the hospital has provided Computed Tomography (CT) scans for years, the addition of PET/CT technology marks a major upgrade in imaging precision and patient care, the health system said.

A PET scan helps detect abnormal activity in the body by tracking how organs and tissues are functioning using a small amount of radioactive tracer. A CT (Computed Tomography) scan, on the other hand, produces highly detailed images of the body’s internal structures. The new PET/CT scanner overlays both imaging technologies into one powerful tool, offering physicians a more accurate and complete picture — especially useful in diagnosing, staging, and monitoring conditions like cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders.

For patients, this means quicker, more precise diagnoses and better-informed treatment decisions, all without needing to travel far from home.

“This is an important milestone for our hospital and the community we serve,” said Tony Martinelli, President and CEO of WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital. “By bringing PET/CT technology to Wetzel County, we are advancing our mission to provide high-quality, comprehensive care close to home. Our patients deserve access to the very best in medical technology–and now they’ll have it right here, where they live.”

Patients can schedule appointments through their primary care providers.

Starting at $2.99/week.
