Laborers International Union of North America Locals 1149 of Wheeling and 809 of Steubenville, hosted a charity softball tournament at the St. Clairsville Jr. Sports Complex this past weekend.

Four teams made up of union construction workers competed in the tournament. Participating locals were Laborers’ Local 1149, Laborer’s Local 809, Roofers’ Local 188 of Wheeling, and the WVALDC Team composed of laborers from Local 616 from Cumberland, Maryland, and Local 1149.

The tournament was a round-robin format with the two teams with the best records meeting in a championship game. Laborers’ Local 1149 came out victorious, 20-13, in the championship game.

The event raised more than $4,000 for the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley Flood Relief Fund.

“This event was a huge success. We plan on expanding the tournament next year to allow for more teams and to have a bigger impact in helping those in need,” organizer Kyle Kull said.

The event was part of the LiUNA Laborers Rising Program, which is an initiative to get LiUNA members to volunteer in their communities.

Prior events with LiUNA Volunteers have included the Laborers’ Rising Golf Scramble which benefitted Coats for Kids, flood cleanup in Triadelphia and Elm Grove, numerous events with the Ohio County Special Olympics, the St. Clairsville Parks and Recreation Department’s Gobble Til We Wobble 5K, and Inclusion on Ice and the Spectrum of Color 5K hosted by Augusta Levy Learning Center.

Starting at $2.99/week.
