One Remains Hospitalized After Pennsylvania Mine Accident

One miner remains hospitalized after an underground accident at the Harvey Mine in Greene County late Monday.

Six miners were initially taken to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment after the incident, which involved a pressurized water hose, mine owner Core Natural Resources said in a statement Tuesday.

Greene County officials received the call around 11 p.m. from Washington County Ambulance & Chair, Emergency Services Director Richard Policz said.

Five of the miners were treated and released, while one remains in a hospital for further evaluation, Core said in its statement. Core thanked local emergency responders who assisted its team.

“We are conducting an internal review of last night’s event to determine the exact cause of the accident while working with all appropriate agencies,” the statement said.

The mine is located along Patterson Creek Road in Sycamore.

Tuesday afternoon, state Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson Laina Aquiline said agency personnel were monitoring the site and investigating the cause of the incident.

“The well-being of the mine workers is top of mind,” she said. “We’re heartened to learn that the majority of the miners have already been discharged from the hospital, and we hope for their continued swift and full recovery.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
