Former State Senator Larry Edgell of Wetzel County Has Died at 79

Former West Virginia State Sen. Larry Edgell, who rose to the role of president pro tempore, died Wednesday at age 79, according to statements from the West Virginia Democratic Party and Gov. Patrick Morrisey.

Edgell, a longtime educator and U.S. Navy veteran, lived in New Martinsville and served the Second Senatorial District from 1998-2014. A Democrat, he was named president pro tempore in 2013 and served on the Education and Finance committees in the Senate.

Former Senate President Jeff Kessler, who appointed Edgell as president pro tempore, lauded Edgell for his spirit and ability to work across the aisle.

“He was a man of great integrity who was trusted and admired by both sides of the aisle,” Kessler said. “His infectious smile lit up every room he entered and his dedicated work improved the lives of all he touched.”

West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin also commended Edgell’s work in the state senate, as well as his character.

“Larry Edgell exemplified what it means to be a public servant,” Pushkin said. “He was guided by a deep sense of duty — to his students, his constituents, and his state. As a teacher, a veteran, and a legislator, Larry dedicated his life to lifting others up and expanding opportunity for West Virginians.”

Morrisey also released a statement praising Edgell’s contributions to West Virginia, saying he represented his community with “integrity, humility, and a steadfast commitment to the public good.”

“A proud veteran, educator, and legislator, he exemplified the very best of public service,” Morrisey said. “Whether in the classroom, in uniform, or in the halls of the Capitol, he worked tirelessly to expand opportunity and improve the lives of others. His legacy of service to the Mountain State will be long remembered.”

Edgell is survived by his wife Cecilia, daughter Eva and son Josh.
