Homeless Encampment Cleanup Continues
The cleanup of the homeless encampment near Peninsula Cemetery in Fulton stretched into a second day Wednesday, as city crews continued pulling refuse out of the area.
Dozens of Dumpsters of leftover items were hauled away when cleanup began Tuesday. Workers were cleaning up items that were left both in the encampment and that were found over the hill along the bank of Wheeling Creek.
The encampment had been the area in Wheeling that was exempt from the city’s ordinance that banned camping on public property. In October, Wheeling City Council voted to close the encampment on December 1, calling it a “failure.”
The encampment closed at 5 p.m. Monday, though anyone who stayed overnight wasn’t arrested.
On Tuesday morning, crews began dismantling the camp. There are 80 beds for the homeless in Wheeling, 50 for men at the Life Hub and 30 for women at the Salvation Army.
