National Weather Service Predicting 5-8 Inches of Snow for the Ohio Valley by Early Sunday
WHEELING — Those who feel they had enough winter weather following the several inches of snow that blanketed the Ohio Valley earlier this month are in for some bad news.
More snow — and lots of it — is forecast for the region this weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday for eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Between five and eight inches of snow is predicted in that period, with some spots possibly seeing more.
Most of the snow is predicted to fall after 3 p.m. Saturday, as the chance of precipitation will reach 90% at that point with accumulation between one to three inches possible. By Saturday night, snowfall is essentially a certainty, with a 100% chance and new accumulation between two and four inches. Most of the snow should end by 1 a.m. Sunday.
Further complicating matters is the frigid cold forecast for the area. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 12 degrees Saturday night, climb only to 20 degrees Sunday and fall back to 13 degrees Sunday night.
Temperatures aren’t predicted to climb above freezing until Tuesday with a predicted high of 35 degrees.
The NWS is urging Ohio Valley residents to stay inside if at all possible. Those who do need to venture outdoors should dress in layers and make sure to cover all exposed skin to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Travel on the roads is also discouraged, but if it’s necessary, motorists should use extreme caution, leave plenty of room between them and motorists ahead of them and avoid sudden stops and hard braking.
Those who are unhoused around Wheeling have opportunities to stay indoors during the night. The Life Hub in downtown Wheeling has beds for men, while the Salvation Army in downtown Wheeling has beds for women.
The forecast led to some events around the valley getting rescheduled. Wheeling Park High School’s Saturday performance of the “Festival of Sound” was moved to noon to beat the weather. Ohio County Schools will decide if Sunday’s performance will be rescheduled based on how much snow comes Saturday night.
