Wheeling Man Arrested Following Foot Pursuit in Benwood

BENWOOD – The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department responded Thursday with the Benwood Police Department to a report of an unauthorized individual inside the Mull Building, a closed facility in Benwood. The building, which should have been vacant except for the owner, was searched by law enforcement officers.

During the search, deputies located a suspect later identified as Benjamin E. Senkbeil of Wheeling. Senkbeil allegedly attempted to evade capture by climbing into the rafters and ignoring law enforcement’s commands. In an effort to avoid apprehension, he allegedly entered three separate buildings by moving through windows and accessing roofs, demonstrating a clear intent to flee.

After an extensive pursuit through the interconnected structures, Senkbeil was ultimately cornered and taken into custody without further incident.

The arrest concluded a coordinated effort involving the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police, Benwood Police Department, Moundsville Police Department, and the Benwood Volunteer Fire Department.

“I am extremely proud of the teamwork and professionalism demonstrated by our deputies and our partner agencies. In particular, one of my deputies and a West Virginia State Trooper risked serious injury by climbing onto an I-beam more than 30 feet above the ground to ensure Mr. Senkbeil was safely taken into custody,” Marshall County Sheriff Mike Dougherty said. “Their courage and dedication are a testament to the commitment of law enforcement in Marshall County.”

Senkbeil was processed and lodged at the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail. He is charged with three counts of entering without breaking, trespassing, fleeing and obstruction. Senkbeil was just recently released from jail on similar charges.

Dougherty thanked all agencies involved for their swift response and cooperation.
