MOUNDSVILLE – Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy recently offered Moundsville City Council the latest information regarding the future indoor recreation center — including its popularity with area contractors.

Healy said a pre-bid meeting for interested contractors was held on March 31.

“It was well attended with over 10 general contractors,” he said. “At the request of bidders, the bid opening date has been pushed back two weeks to April 30.”

The estimated $4 million recreation center will offer 20,300 square feet of space and be located at the former Sanford Elementary School property on Third Street.

It will house two basketball courts, an indoor track, batting cages, community room, party room, concession stand, showers, locker rooms, and a workout room with fitness equipment.

The metal building itself is anticipated to cost about $3.25 million to construct. The remainder of the $4 million total would go toward HVAC, special flooring and equipment.

The Thrasher Group provided the architectural and engineering plans for the building including those related to mechanical, electrical and plumbing services.

Thrasher is also expected to prepare paperwork related to permits and approvals such as those from the state fire marshal. The city is handling the bidding documents and the construction administration for the project.

Meanwhile, the city’s new Municipal and Safety Building is still under construction, but work is moving along. Healy said new furniture for the building is slated to be delivered April 20.

Healy also mentioned that the city is looking to hire new life guards for the Four Seasons Swimming Pool. Applications are also still being accepted for a full-time police position along with part-time summer street department laborers. Two laborers have already been hired and will start working next week, he noted.

Starting at $2.99/week.
