WHEELING — In a world where calendars are packed, responsibilities pile up and self-care often gets pushed to the bottom of the list, the organizers behind EmpowerFest hope women will spend one day putting themselves first.

The one-day women’s wellness event returns Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Waterfront Hall in downtown Wheeling, bringing together dozens of women-owned businesses offering interactive wellness experiences, shopping and opportunities to build lasting connections.

Created by the hosts of the Ask Yourself, Why Not? podcast, EmpowerFest grew from a shared belief that wellness is stronger when experienced together.

“EmpowerFest was created to help women feel good through self-help and community,” co-founder Shaye Pentino said. “It’s an extension of everything Jayla and I believe through our Ask Yourself, Why Not? podcast, that taking care of yourself doesn’t have to happen alone.”

Pentino said the event was designed to introduce women to local wellness resources while encouraging them to step away from daily routines and reconnect with themselves.

“We wanted to create a space where women could discover local wellness resources, try something new, connect with one another, and leave feeling like they poured back into themselves,” she said.

For co-founder Jayla Robinson, the message is simple.

“We’re passionate about helping people stop waiting for the ‘perfect time’ to prioritize themselves,” Robinson said. “EmpowerFest brings together incredible local women who are making our community healthier, happier, and more connected. It’s a day that reminds you it’s okay to invest in yourself.”

Unlike a traditional conference, EmpowerFest encourages participation rather than observation.

“One of the things that makes EmpowerFest unique is that it’s completely interactive,” Pentino said. “Instead of sitting and listening all day, attendees get to experience wellness firsthand.”

Visitors can explore complimentary mini wellness and beauty experiences, including massage, Reiki, tarot readings, empowerment photos, hair glow-ups, breathwork, henna tattoos, piercing experiences, Botox consultations with a $25 gift card toward future Botox services, facials and permanent jewelry. Shopping opportunities with women-owned businesses and optional upgraded experiences also will be available.

Pentino said attendees will also meet local women entrepreneurs, practitioners and business owners offering health, beauty and wellness services.

Robinson believes the event introduces people to businesses they may have never discovered otherwise.

“It’s a chance to discover amazing local businesses you may not even know exist,” she said. “Whether you’re interested in physical wellness, mental health, beauty, spirituality, or simply supporting local women-owned businesses, there’s something for everyone.”

Beyond wellness experiences, organizers hope the event helps foster friendships.

“If you’ve ever wished your group chat would actually turn into real life, this event is for you,” Robinson said. “Whether you come with friends or come alone, you’ll find yourself surrounded by women who are looking for the same thing, connection, encouragement, and a fun day focused on feeling good.”

Pentino said EmpowerFest also welcomes anyone interested in exploring something new.

“It’s also perfect for anyone who’s curious,” she said. “Maybe you’ve wanted to try Reiki, get a facial, explore wellness services, meet new people, or simply do something different for yourself.”

The idea for EmpowerFest grew naturally from the mission behind the organizers’ podcast.

“The mission of our podcast has always been to help people feel good through self-help and community,” Robinson said. “EmpowerFest simply brings that mission to life in person.”

Pentino said the event also addresses a growing need for authentic relationships while supporting local entrepreneurs.

“As adults, making friends and finding genuine community can be surprisingly difficult,” she said. “We also have so many incredible women-owned businesses and wellness practitioners in our area that deserve to be discovered.”

She added that EmpowerFest bridges those needs by creating meaningful connections while showcasing businesses dedicated to improving the lives of others.

Organizers hope attendees leave with more than shopping bags or a relaxing afternoon.

“Our biggest hope is that women leave feeling empowered, inspired, and reminded that taking care of themselves matters,” Pentino said.

Robinson said success will be measured by something much simpler.

“If someone leaves saying, ‘I needed this,’ then we’ve done our job,” she said.

Tickets are available online through Eventbrite or may be purchased at the door, although organizers noted last year’s event sold out and space is limited.

Starting at $3.70/week.
