MOUNDSVILLE – Students from throughout the Northern Panhandle will be busy this summer after being selected to one of several West Virginia Governor’s Schools.

Starting Friday, students from across West Virginia will begin one of multiple Governor’s School experiences throughout the Mountain State. The Governor’s School for Tourism, held at travel destinations statewide, will run from June 20-29. The Governor’s School for the Arts at West Virginia Wesleyan College will run from June 21-July 11. The Governor’s Computer Science Institute at West Virginia University Tech will run from July 6-12. The Governor’s Honors Academy at West Virginia University will run from July 11-25. And the Governor’s School for Entrepreneurship at Marshall University will run from July 17-26.

The Marshall County Board of Education recently recognized students who are slated to attend the West Virginia Governor’s Schools, each of them receiving certificates of recognition from the board.

“It’s quite an honor to be chosen by your school and by the county,” Marshall County Schools Superintendent Shelby Haines said. “It’s an honor to represent the county at the governor’s school and not many students are chosen to participate in that program.”

Students Allie McGraw and Fiona Ren will be attending the Governor’s Honors Academy, Taylor Norman and AJ Pintus will attend the Governor’s School for the Arts, Chylie Norris and Ani Snider will attend the Governor’s School for Tourism.

Students from Ohio County also will take part. Ohio County Schools students attending include Rosalie Dobson, Audrey Kenamond, Ava Flaharty, Carter Kidd, Oliver Ortega, Reagan Pockl, Kiya-Lynn Vaughn, Adam Chao, Briele Dobson, Samantha Hudson and Ludovica Santini. The district did not have specfic information on which students would attend which schools. From Linsly, Adam Zatazelo and Hunter Burkey have been selected to attend, as has Elizabeth Manning from Wheeling Central Catholic High School.

Wetzel County Schools students scheduled to participate in Governor’s Schools include Lindsey Barcus, Brookelyn Dyer and Madison Marshall. Tyler County Schools students picked to attend the program are Jackson Smith and Samuel Thorn. Brooke County Schools students slated to attend include Andrea Bolen and Carl DiGiacinto II. Hancock County Schools students who were chosen to participate include Jessa Fields, Justin Kaczmarek, Gabriel Marchese and Jackson Phillips.

According to the West Virginia Department of Education, the governor’s school program’s “curriculum serves as a unique supplement to the standard high school curriculum. The program is not an acceleration of high school or an expectancy of college curricula. Students are led to explore cutting-edge theories in the arts and sciences and develop a greater understanding of how art, culture, and knowledge change with time. Students are challenged with developing creative and intellectual skills critical to their placement as productive citizens of our communities.”

Starting at $3.70/week.
