GLEN DALE -- The historic Cockayne Farmstead will begin a new fiber arts workshop series Aug. 4.
The series is made possible through Mid Atlantic Arts’ Central Appalachia Living Traditions program and will feature five workshops that can be taken individually or as a sequence.
The workshops will cover spinning, natural dyeing, weaving, knitting and crocheting. All sessions are designed for beginners with no previous experience.
The series is intended to teach textile creation from start to finish, allowing participants who complete all five workshops to create an heirloom product entirely by hand, from fleece to finished piece.
The workshops also are designed as an opportunity for multiple generations to learn traditional Appalachian skills together, with grandparent-grandchild or parent-child pairs and trios encouraged. Participants must be at least 14 years old.
These skills were once an important part of Marshall County’s cultural heritage, and organizers say teaching them is an important part of preserving local history and strengthening the community.

Thanks to grant sponsorship, reduced registration fees are available for individual classes, along with discounted rates for participants who register for the full series or for multigenerational pairs or trios.
