Game, Set, Renovate: Upgrades Needed At Tennis Facilities

By JOSELYN KING 2 min read

WHEELING -- Officials at Ohio County Schools say they have a strong tennis program, but not such strong tennis courts and facilities to support it.

The school district hopes to do something about that in the coming months, according to Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones.

At this week’s Ohio County Board of Education meeting, an agenda item to discuss the tennis courts was tabled. Jones explained that more discussion and investigation were needed.

"Our courts have been in disrepair for several years," Jones said. "We're contemplating if we really want to redo those. If we did, we would need better seating and parking."

Currently, the school district is "in the middle of what direction we want to go," he continued.

"We should know something by mid-August," Jones said. "Whatever we do, there will be a major improvement to our facilities."

He said whatever is decided will be ready by the time tennis season starts next spring.

"As always, we want to give students and athletes the best facilities we can," Jones continued. "We have a great tennis program, some good players, and tennis is a popular program. We want to make it as nice as we can.

"We can still play on our courts, but they have a bunch of cracks. They are not nice anymore, and they need a full rehab. We are going over our options," he said.
