MOUNDSVILLE -- Marshall County Board of Education members were reminded Tuesday that the annual Back To School Fun Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to noon today at the John Marshall Field House, located off Tomlinson Avenue in Moundsville.
Superintendent Shelby Haines told board members during their Tuesday evening meeting that the school district will have a table set up during the event and encouraged board members to attend.
The free event, organized annually by Susie Baker, provides children and families with an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming school year by receiving backpacks, school supplies and hygiene items. Food also will be available, along with chances to win bicycles, Kennywood tickets and raffle baskets.
Free doughnuts and milk will be provided for breakfast, and free haircut vouchers also will be available.
The fair helps families save money on school supplies while providing an opportunity for students to meet former and new teachers before the school year begins. Health and dental screenings also will be available.
Haines said there is no income requirement to attend and all students are welcome.
The event previously was held at the former West Virginia Penitentiary's Moundsville Center. Baker said the location was no longer available for community events because the facility is now used only for training by the Northern Regional Jail.
The John Marshall Field House is located beside Monarch Stadium and near Moundsville Middle School. Haines said a law enforcement officer will be on site to help organize the line of attendees.
"We do have an officer working because even though everybody gets something, there will still be people lining up at midnight," Haines said.
Although the event has a new location, Haines said she believes the transition will help improve the flow of the event.
"We're very lucky to have Susie Baker and crew in our county," Haines said. "She's very passionate about this program."
In other matters, the board approved hiring Semper Fi Paving to repave the parking lot at McNinch Primary School at a cost of $385,000.
The board also held a closed-door session to receive a legal update regarding recent flooding that affected the John Marshall High School baseball field. No action was taken following the executive session.
