Moundsville Honor Guard Thanks Marshall County Commission For New 15-Passenger Van

MOUNDSVILLE -- The Marshall County Commission got a look at the Moundsville Honor Guard’s new passenger van following Tuesday’s regular meeting.
The commission helped the guard purchase the van, which cost about $70,000, from Shults Ford in Triadelphia.
Guard member Dave Schoenian thanked Commissioners John Gruzinskas and David McLaughlin, along with Commission President Scott Varner, for the van. He said the guard’s old vehicle was beyond repair and members were concerned about getting stranded while traveling to ceremonies across the Ohio Valley.
The honor guard performs about 110 final salutes during veterans funerals each year. Members travel within a 50-mile radius and also participate in many community events.
The new Ford E-350 van seats 15 people and includes space in the rear to store flags and equipment used during ceremonies.
“We had trouble with our other van and we were scared about getting stranded out in the middle of nowhere,” guard member Paul Amrhein said. “The veterans are all middle aged now and you can’t strand them out in the heat and the cold.”
He said the new vehicle is similar to the old one but features all-wheel drive and provides a much smoother ride.
“Safety is key for us,” Schoenian added. “We’re so proud and honored to have this new van. We can’t thank the commissioners enough for their support.”
