The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis for only the second time in its history, warning that a sharp decline in donations has left the nation’s blood supply at critically low levels.
The organization said blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, creating an urgent need for donors as hospitals continue to rely on lifesaving transfusions. All blood types are needed, but officials said the shortage is especially severe for type O blood.
According to the Red Cross, its supply of O-positive blood has dropped below a one-day supply, forcing the organization to limit distributions of some blood products to hospitals.
Despite thousands of people responding after the emergency blood shortage was first announced earlier this month, donations have not kept pace with hospital demand, the Red Cross said.
Officials attributed the decline in part to extreme heat, poor air quality and widespread foodborne illnesses, all of which have reduced donor turnout during the busy summer months.
“This summer has brought a number of unique challenges that have placed additional strain on our blood supply, creating growing concerns for hospitals and the patients who rely on lifesaving transfusions,” Paul Sullivan, senior vice president of donor services for the Red Cross, said in a statement.
Sullivan said that if just three additional donors gave blood at each drive this summer, it could help stabilize the nation’s blood supply and ensure hospitals have the blood products they need through the remainder of the season.
The Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to make an appointment as soon as possible through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, online at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
As an incentive, donors who give blood through July 31 will receive a Fandango movie ticket by email, valid for up to a $15 ticket price and fees. Those who donate between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31 will receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email. Terms and conditions apply.
