WEIRTON - As part of the festivities for the Independence Day holiday, portions of Main Street in Weirton will be closed to traffic from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.
Vehicles will not be allowed to travel between Cove Road and Marland Heights Road, with motorists traveling south detoured onto Cove Road and U.S. 22, and northbound traffic sent onto Marland Heights Road and then West Street, where they will travel to the Lee Avenue intersection and back onto Main Street.
Those driving west on Cove Road will turn north onto Main Street, with those seeking to go south then required to turn left onto Lee Avenue, then south onto West Street and back to Main Street via Marland Heights Road.
Additional portions of Main Street will be closed to traffic beginning at 4:30 p.m. as part of the city’s Independence Day parade.
Northbound lanes on Main Street will be shut down at Lemoyne Avenue, with southbound lanes closed at Pennsylvania Avenue.
In addition, the intersections of Main Street with Virginia Avenue, Taylor Avenue, Ferguson Avenue, Lee Avenue, Cove Road, Mildren Avenue, Lemoyne Avenue, as well as West Street and Virginia Avenue, and Cove Road’s intersections with East Street and Weir Avenue will be closed to traffic during the parade.
Signage will be posted on U.S. 22 to alert about the closures.
Weirton’s Independence Day parade will begin at 5 p.m., with festivities to follow within Municipal Plaza, on the Edwin J. Bowman Field, and on Main Street where the "Freedom Fueled by Revolution" car show is set to be held.
The Weirton Event Center will host performances by Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers and Brownie Mary’s Kelsey and Co., and fireworks will be set off around 10 p.m.
