MOUNDSVILLE -- West Virginia Treasurer Larry Pack presented the Marshall County Commission with an unclaimed property check for $4,179.24 on Thursday.
The amount given to the county was determined by the amount of unclaimed funds that originated in the county, Pack said.
"We worked with their offices to identify money and get it back to them," he said. "We're really glad to do that. We do public presentations on unclaimed property because we are trying to drive people to our website. We're trying to have people look and see if they have any unclaimed property."
The website is https://www.wvunclaimedproperty.gov.
"There's $500 million all across West Virginia that we need to give back," Pack said. "Anybody in Marshall County, please go to the website and put any family name you can think of and I'll think you'll be surprised."
In general, unclaimed funds can include an inheritance, a forgotten bank account, life insurance proceeds, royalties from oil, gas or coal and more.
"My wife and I did it a few months ago, about a year ago; we're both CPAs and you think we don't lose money? We got $600 out of it," Pack said. "It just happens."
He said about $40 million was returned during the last fiscal year, but another $60 million to $70 million has already come back in.
Pack said people also can call the treasurer's office for guidance at (800) 642-8687.
Following the presentation, Pack said he planned to tour Grand Vue Park.
"We're going to talk to the county commissioners and county officials ... and figure out how to help Marshall County move forward," he added.
Commission President Scott Varner said he was glad to receive the funds on the county’s behalf.
"Every bit matters and we can put it back into programs and those sorts of things for our citizens," he said, noting plans for the money will be discussed during a future commission meeting.
