Wheeling McDonald’s Employee Earns College Degree Through Archways To Opportunity

Employees, family and friends gathered July 22 at the McDonald’s restaurant on Warwood Avenue to celebrate Shift Lead Heather Hays, who recently earned her college degree through McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity education program.

Hays completed her degree online through McDonald’s partnership with Colorado Technical University, which provided schooling at no cost to her. She has worked at McDonald’s for eight years, serving in a variety of leadership roles, including crew trainer, manager, hospitality team member and people lead.

Balancing work, family and school, Hays completed her degree while raising her two children, ages 14 and 12. She credits McDonald’s flexible scheduling with making it possible to pursue her education while continuing her career.

“She’s worked hard for her degree, and we’re very proud of her and everything she has accomplished,” said McDonald’s Owner/Operator Bob Stoltz. “Heather’s dedication, perseverance and leadership make her a tremendous role model for our entire team. Her success shows what’s possible when employees take advantage of the opportunities available through Archways to Opportunity.”

McDonald’s marked Hays’ accomplishment with a graduation ceremony at the restaurant, recognizing her commitment to personal and professional growth.

Tuition assistance is just one piece of Archways to Opportunity, McDonald's signature education program. At participating restaurants, McDonald's Archways to Opportunity supports McDonald's employees in pursuing high school, higher education and career advancement. It provides comprehensive educational support including English language skills, high school diploma programs, and college degree assistance. Since its inception, the program has impacted over 65,000 restaurant employees.

For Hays, the program represents more than earning a degree, it demonstrates that career advancement and higher education can go hand in hand.
